About the role

This is an opportunity for an experienced HR professional to make a real difference in a national charity with around 30 employees.

We are looking for an experienced HR professional who can help us deliver excellent HR practice across the organisation. Being a well-run organisation is one of our strategic objectives and this role will play an important part in achieving that.

You will bring a practical and confident approach to HR, building positive working relationships and supporting managers to handle complex or sensitive situations. You will provide clear advice and guidance with sound professional judgement and a willingness to address difficult issues when needed.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have worked as the sole HR professional in a small or medium-sized organisation.

You will be comfortable taking responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of HR, advising senior leaders and managing the HR function independently.

You will also have access to an external HR adviser with expertise in employment law, providing additional professional support when required.

What you’ll be doing

You will take responsibility for a broad range of HR activities, including:

  • Providing advice on employment law and HR matters to senior leaders and managers.
  • Managing employee relations cases, including performance and capability.
  • Supporting managers to address performance and conduct concerns promptly, fairly and constructively, including helping them navigate difficult conversations.
  • Managing recruitment, employment contracts, induction, probation and other employee processes.
  • Ensuring our HR policies, procedures and records are accurate, compliant and up to date.
  • Advising on employment law developments and ensuring the organisation meets its legal obligations.
  • Managing HR administration and appropriate checks for our volunteers and trustees.
  • Working with external HR advisers where specialist support is required.

About you

We are looking for a capable HR generalist with strong employment law knowledge, sound judgement and the confidence to work independently.

You will bring:

  • Experience as the sole HR expert in a small or medium-sized organisation.
  • A relevant professional HR qualification or equivalent practical expertise, supported by ongoing professional development.
  • A thorough, up-to-date understanding of UK employment law and good HR practice.
  • Experience of managing complex employee relations matters and formal HR processes.
  • The confidence to advise and challenge senior leaders, make clear recommendations and handle difficult decisions.
  • Strong commercial awareness and the ability to balance the needs of employees with organisational priorities.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and relationship-building skills.
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach, with the ability to take ownership and see matters through to completion.
  • You will be comfortable working in a small team, managing competing priorities and providing candid, impartial advice when it matters.
  • Above all, we want someone who combines professional integrity, sound commercial judgement and a practical, people-focused approach to HR.

We welcome candidates with experience of working inside a charity or those looking to move to a charity for the first time.

How to apply:

Please send a CV and cover letter outlining how you meet the requirements of this role.

Interview dates:

  • First round interview (virtual): Monday 30 November or Tuesday 1 December
  • Final round interview (in person in Central London, in the afternoon): Monday 7 December
